The Pursuit of Success

The Pursuit of Success

The path towards the peak is always strewn with roadblocks, real and presumed. The harder the climb, the sweeter the victory.  “Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning”. Wise words were spoken by Benjamin Franklin, one of the powerhouses of his time. It’s also true that lasing success comes with a price tag that is too expensive, and demands sacrifices and categorical decisions at every turn, and few are willing to venture into such perilous territory.

It’s imperative to stress the importance of clarity. The clarity in purpose is like the beacon, or perhaps like a lighthouse that guides a ship on a stormy night. Many fail here and are left to pick up the fragments of broken dreams. Every individual must have a master plan and effective contingency mechanisms. Deliberate questions like, “ Is my potential being utilized to the fullest? Or What should I try differently this time for greater impact?” Are questions that must be asked again and again. Success is not measured by an individuals’ assets or overall net worth, though they are fine to have. A successful life brims with passion and purpose and is characterized by long-lasting winning relationships. Money doesn’t determine an individual’s success, contrary to popular opinion. Had that been the case, there wouldn’t have been a rise in substance abuse and murders amongst the wealthiest individuals in the world.

Jim Carrey is perhaps one of those rare individuals who visualized success long before they tasted it. That doesn’t discount the importance of hard work. Yet I have read the stories of some of the greatest billionaires of our time and their origins can be traced to humble beginnings. That burning desire, clarity of vision and a firm resolve to beat the odds with a little bit of eccentric out of the box thinking are the trademark characteristics of some of the world’s greatest pioneers.

Many people condemn themselves needlessly and think they have blown it. Case in point. Abraham Lincoln failed in his bid for the United States presidency fifty-two times. But he nailed it eventually. Don’t predict what can or cannot happen. Life has a way of rewarding hard work and undeniable talent.

We shall explore a few blocks/ limiting beliefs that severely deter an individual in his path to progress. The life that we know today is brimming with possibilities and even bigger diversions. No wonder, clarity in purpose which I have spoken about earlier is key. Razor-sharp intent and focus is a driving indicator for lasting success. Your past mistakes are not a predictor of future success. One of the key questions to ask yourself is, “ If I don’t believe in myself who will?” Don’t assume the outcome. It’s quite possible that you might be a victim of bad decision making and your confidence has taken a beating. Starting again is risky. But, staying in the same place is riskier still. Let me elaborate. Life today can be compared to a raging current. You either swim upstream or downstream. And if you don’t swim at all, you don’t have a say in the outcome. It takes sheer persistence to swim upstream. You could very well become your own biggest critic and interpret life negatively. Do it enough and it eventually becomes your default mechanism.

Remember the golden rule for successful living is taking personal accountability for your actions. Regardless of your race, ethnicity, gender, conflicting relationships and a host of other factors, it all boils down to you. Success is a very personal choice. You cannot blame bad genes or lack of resources for failure. The way you see yourself determines everything that happens to you. Win the war in your mind first. Engage with the world at large, for it will aid you in your journey towards fulfillment.

Henry Kissinger sums it up beautifully, “Every success is usually an admission ticket to a new set of decisions.” Ask questions, seek help, view setbacks as a learning opportunity and have a bird’s eye view of the future. Anticipate the future and then create it.

The Power of Perspective – Career Path

The Power of Perspective – Career Path

From the moment youngsters have learnt the art of stringing words together, their parents and teachers relentlessly talk about the importance of charting a career path. Our planet is witnessing remarkable change and growth, with new concepts and paradigms taking shape. What was relevant yesterday is outdated today. This is a radical shift and demands greater emphasis on the training and subsequent personality development for the younger generation.

We shall explore in greater detail each of the career quadrants, which can be effectively broken down into four divisions. The first quadrant focuses on happiness which further leads to fulfillment and inner satisfaction. The second quadrant focuses on money, as the end goal. The third quadrant is education and the joy of learning and reading. The fourth quadrant is all about leaving a legacy. Every individual associate himself/herself with one particular quadrant, or in some cases, some individuals identify with each of the four quadrants in different proportions. In all my years of research and subsequent interactions with people belonging to various career ventures, what

Perhaps, in this frantic desire to achieve a degree, individuals have forgotten the purpose, and more importantly, what they really want to do or would like to be involved in.

Before attempting any feat or venture, it’s very important to ask oneself certain hard-hitting questions. Let me emphasize it again, “It’s very important to ask oneself” . Not the family or the government or your mentor. No Pun intended. Sadly, this generation is focused on doing or blindly believing what someone else has said. Questions like,

These days individuals are focused on drowning the inner voice by involving oneself in frantic activity, drinking or being supremely busy. Let me emphasize this, “Business doesn’t equal productivity. Perhaps, it might be a wise decision to work smarter, not harder, but I shall save that concept and explore it in detail in another article.

CareerThis dialogue is meant to motivate you to start thinking, take a deep dive into introspection, and ask yourself questions that will only embolden you to take stock. Always remember, it’s never too late to make changes that eventually make you happy. There’s no better time than the present. There is another concept that individuals buy into, before exploring it. “He/she is better than me or has better resources. They might be, but you are by no means any less. I loved Sheryl Sandberg’s book, “Lean In”, in which she recounts her own personal journey, and how she saw talent at every turn. But those individuals never “stepped up” .  I couldn’t agree with her more on this.

The only person stopping you is “Yourself”.

This Universe operates on certain principles and funnily enough has a way of rewarding each individual with one opportunity to prove themselves. Will you step up?

Take some time out, if you can. Go on a vacation, and yes, contrary to popular opinion and practice,

Explore your inner instincts. Hone your talents and get back into the mainstream with renewed vigor. For years, I believed in the importance of reading books on career pathways and then following it with utmost sincerity, and though it might work for some, it didn’t for me. I discovered what I really wanted on a vacation to the European highlands, and practicing meditation. My Point? Explore what really works for you. For some it might be one step to the end result, for others, it might be a series of steps. Focus on the end goal and steadily move towards it.

Now here’s a small exercise for you that will give you a hint as to where you are on the career wheel. Rate yourself in the fields of:

  1. Leadership
  2. Achievement
  3. Personal Performance
  4. Vision
  5. Fulfillment
  6. Self Expression
  7. Organization
  8. Excellence

One being the lowest and ten being the highest. Now having rated yourself, what would be different if you would want to rate them, a number or two higher than your present rating. A Professionally trained Coach can bring the best out of you, just working on these ratings.

I wish you luck as you venture deeper into finding true meaning and lasting happiness in your career. “Find something in life that you love doing. If you make a lot of money, that’s a bonus. And if you don’t, you still won’t hate going to work.”

Parenting – A Relationship that Nurtures Future

Parenting – A Relationship that Nurtures Future

Are happy families rapidly becoming extinct in this new age of limitless possibilities? In this age of groundbreaking technological developments and global interconnectedness, keeping in touch with one’s own immediate family seems like a daunting task. Sitting around the fire while sharing a sumptuous meal and funny anecdotes seem confined only to special occasions and holidays. Senior citizens who are relegated to assisted living have become commonplace, a liability that has to be swiftly taken care of. This is the generation of instant fixes. More and more families are adopting a nuclear style of co-existence, as opposed to the joint family system of yesteryears.

In today’s world, parenting has become almost equivalent to running a marathon. In a mad dash to meet deadlines and official responsibilities, children are left at daycare centers or tuition centers. As they grow older, they prefer the world of video games and TV dinners, never having had the chance to interact at a deeper level. Parenting just boils down to provision, and nothing more. The result shouldn’t come as a surprise when more and more children resort to violence fuelled by angst and unresolved feelings. I have seen this played out on numerous occasions in the widely popular Crime series on BBC. Excessive abandonment triggers a deep psychological need to vent and commit audacious crimes. Why is this important? Perhaps to realize how widespread dysfunction can spread for lack of adequate parental support and love. There are always exceptions to the rule, but prevalent psychosocial disorders are inevitably the result of dysfunctional homes. Teenage rebellion is a rite of passage, but coupled with bad parenting is a potent cocktail for disaster. Rehabilitation and therapy can work effectively for the individual, but the damage is already done. We shall explore why good parenting is the need of the hour.

Good parenting is a byproduct of stable committed relationships, where people are mutually invested.

That is the bedrock for creating happy homes, where children thrive. Setting boundaries, establishing good rapport and creating an atmosphere of discipline don’t happen by chance. They are the result of some “serious work” that couples diligently have worked upon. The ripple effects of this kind of parenting are immeasurable, seen over generations. You may ask, Why is this information important to me? Because, you, my friend have the potential to create positive change in your family and impact it in more ways than you imagine. Children in today’s age are bombarded with tons of information, and the relentless drive to compete is starting at a younger age. They need to know they can rely on YOU. They need to know that you will be available and non-judgmental. The statistics for teenage suicides are unbelievable. The World is a dangerous place, where bullying and verbal insults can wreck the kind of damage that will render a child completely devoid of emotion. The importance of having a home that is welcoming and a safe haven can’t be emphasized enough.

Parenting, like any art, requires some sacrifices and a lot of work,  that needs to be perfected over time. In all the years of being a coach, the number one principle that stands out is, TIME. Ironically, that is the one thing that’s in short supply. Children need time, lots of it, in order to handle life’s demands. Go on walks, fishing trips or a road trip. Sometimes, young children need additional support mechanisms to cross over into adolescence. They need to see relationships being modeled in front of them. They need to know that their parents love each other.

If you feel that your parenting skills need a little brushing up, you can always reach out to a relationship expert or a coach who can help you get there. Many couples feel overwhelmed by sudden outbursts and persistent “violent behavior”. It’s crucial to handle such situations with extreme caution, and not retaliate. One of the first steps in the right direction is to discover your image for a happy family and those of others in your family. The next logical step would align all members of the family with some common values, knowing well that each and every member have their own image of a happy family.

I use a technique called family wheel for improvement, and set a vision for an empowered family and identify beliefs that hold you back from becoming an empowered family before I coach on how to build an empowered family. Whether you are a new parent and want to learn the ropes or you are an experienced one dealing with teenage angst, reach out to a coach who can give you the tools to master parenting. The end result? To create an empowered family that’s high on synergy.

leadership

Leadership Strengths a Holistic Perspective

What Would You Do If You weren’t Afraid?

John Maxwell defines leadership as Influence. But, true leadership is much more than that.  It is an eclectic mix of qualities that make an individual stand out.  Now, we all know that not everyone is born great. Some have greatness thrust upon them, whereas others make their own path and leave a legacy. We shall explore the latter.

We all have been designed with a DNA that is completely unique. No two individuals are the same, and our capabilities if harnessed expertly have the potential to make us great. The Catch? The majority of individuals die with the music still in them. Ironic Isn’t it? I have always been fascinated with the workings of the human mind and why people do what they do. And in all my years of interacting with people from all walks of life, I have come across this blatant truth played out in people’s lives. We are afraid. Afraid of the Dark, afraid of the future, afraid of stepping out. And that single thought stunts an individual’s growth, like nothing else.

It’s easier said than done!! And leadership certainly is not a trait that can be memorized and can certainly not be mastered while following the pack. And why is it important to demonstrate leadership? Because the times demand it.

Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Ellen Degeneres, and a host of other leaders just didn’t become a leader by chance. While it might be true that they had the basic qualities that made them stand out, it’s also important to mention that they worked at their craft meticulously. Why do the majority of leaders fail despite good intentions? Because they just might be following the same principles blindly that made others great. Figure out what makes you tick. What is it that you are good at? Trust me, I was in the wrong industry for years and I wondered why I struggled so much. Dream and have a big Vision, but know when to draw the line and pursue your inner instinct.

We shall explore a few of the essential practices that are timeless, and they are by no means exhaustive. Emotional Intelligence ranks number one on the list with the sheer dimension it covers. You get this right and people will willingly buy into your vision. High Energy Relationships don’t amount to being a people pleaser. It’s building the right connections and building your brand. Dynamic Communication equals the power of simple and conciseness. Time is everything. Productivity simply implies performance. Day in and Day out. As I mentioned earlier, have a big vision and work every day towards that master goal. Problem Solving is a biggie. It requires analytical reasoning and the patience to deal with sudden unexpected delays. Inspiring others is quite simply, empowering others. Let’s face it! It’s lonely at the top, and you certainly wouldn’t want to be there all alone. Cultivate wellness and make it a goal to let life take you by surprise sometimes. That’s the serendipity of life. Time Management ranks last on the list and is the driver for key performance. Build your life around key priorities and then establish a mechanism to achieve it. Followed meticulously, it has the potential to yield a rich harvest irrespective of the climate.

Now that you have a map that gives a brief overview of leadership, your next step is to identify where you are.

Some achieve breakthroughs earlier, while others need a bit of coaching to help them get there. It’s okay to ask for help and have a supportive network. But remember, the ability to build your life rests in your own hands.

I would love to mention real-life examples, and the list would go on and on. But I will leave you with one thought. “It’s not important how and where you start. That was not in YOUR hands. But, it’s important how YOU finish. AND, that is in YOUR hands. Let this thought be the starting point as YOU write your OWN Masterpiece!!!
