The Power of Being Proactive

One of the secrets of success is to refuse to let temporary setbacks defeat us. Every individual on this planet has perhaps faced a failure or a setback at some stage in their life. Successful people forge ahead despite the setbacks and see failure as an opportunity to come back stronger. While others see setbacks as an excuse to blame themselves and the circumstances for their misfortunes. In the words of the prominent philosopher, Denis Waitley. “Success in life comes not from holding a good hand, but in playing a poor hand well.”’

Being proactive in a negative situation is not naïve. Its leadership. An individual’s response governs not only how far they will go but also the influence they might have on others. The ability to see the gold in every situation is a skill that must be mastered. And the fact that you are reading this right now is a demonstration of your desire to cultivate those skills.

Given below are some of the key steps that I have seen countless people implement successfully in their lives. In no particular Order:

Stop being “the Victim”– Often we see ourselves at being the receiving end of things. Things didn’t go our way. People treated us badly. And our plans backfired. Now we play the victim card and end up feeling more miserable. Stop adding fuel to the fire and choose to take ownership. Nothing will make you feel better than choosing to actively participate in the construction of your life.

Some people will Never Support you– The World is not waiting to cheer you on and let’s accept it, “some people will never give you credit even if you accomplish the gigantic task of conquering Mt Everest.” Accept it. Do yourself a favor and Move on.

Learn from your failures– This is crucial. Most people would prefer to forget the embarrassing episode and the time that presentation bombed. Quick tip. People aren’t quite thinking about it as much as you are. Learn the lesson. Or else life will present the same test again to do a quick check on your proficiency.

It’s all About Perspective– Jack Ma failed multiple times before Alibaba became a household name. Would he have gotten far if he hadn’t learnt from his failures? I doubt it.

Think about how far you have Come– All the challenges and roadblocks that you faced. The Innumerable obstacles you faced to make it till this very minute. Are you seriously going to throw it all away for a temporary detour?

Take a break, PLEASE– You must have heard this repeated quite often. “Rest if you must but don’t you quit. Or, “sleep on it. “We are not designed to function on optimum efficiency 24/7. And when you are severely burned out, minor irritations can take the shape of something momentous. Taking a break is not a luxury. It’s a necessity just as important as food and water.

Pay Attention to the Details– Every failure, every setback has unlimited potential. Now you know what wont work. Now you have gone through the fire so to speak. Those lessons will prove to be priceless when you embark on another venture. Failure is just as important as Success.

Take Personal Responsibility– Most people would prefer coasting through life and then naively expect a different result. Our lives are governed by cause and effect. Its virtually impossible to reap the results if you haven’t invested any effort into it.

Play the Long Game– There are no quick fixes. And if you live long enough, you will inevitably run into defeats and failures. Your response in a negative situation will change the dynamic. Choose wisely.

Resolve to make a Winning Comeback– Now you have gone through it all. Resolve to WIN this time around. The greater the failure, the greater the drive to succeed. Fail and fail often. That is the fuel you need for your home run.

Remember, mistakes are proof that you are trying. That you are human. Every setback is an invitation to grow, evolve and come back stronger. Les Brown sums it up brilliantly,” Anytime you suffer a setback or disappointment, put your head down and plow ahead.”

Your Setback is the Platform for your Comeback.
