What Motivates You?

What Motivates You?

We all desire success in our lives. Success feels tremendous and fills our lives with meaning and purpose. Along this journey, there are inevitable roadblocks and minor frustrations that threaten to weaken our resolve. Thomas Edison, the great American Businessman, failed 10,000 times before the lightbulb’s invention. Yet, he took it as a huge win. He later retorted, “I have not failed; I have just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” To use failures as a launchpad for future successes is what all successful entrepreneurs and people in business repeatedly do.

Every individual visualizes the future. A future is brimming with great success and influence. But how does someone get from Point A to Point B? The answer is a set of carefully defined objectives and an unwavering determination to accomplish them.
Let’s break it down –

Celebrate Small Wins: Everyone dreams of super success, a massive win. But those wins are usually the result of innumerable small victories that stack up. There is something called “the law of compounding.” Repetition coupled with smart strategy will set you up for great success. Never discredit small wins.

Smart Habits: Nothing can beat consistent effort. But consistency doesn’t spring up suddenly. When you decide to show up every day, regardless of the prevailing mood or situation, you are laying the foundation for a habit. Those habits have the power to alter your life.

Reward Yourself Often- Rather than waiting for a momentous occasion, make rewarding yourself an intentional activity. Mini vacations and spontaneous lunches are all great ways not only to enjoy the present moment but they are a great productivity booster.

Everyone Operates on their Timeline– You are not early nor too late. Stop measuring your progress based on how others are doing in their life. Someone might achieve great success at 20. Others might achieve it when they are older. Stop pressuring yourself. You are doing just fine.

Track Your Progress: You will be amazed if you sit down to analyze the remarkable progress you have made in the last six months. Sometimes, we are caught up in a whirlwind of activity and forget to take stock of things. It’s essential to chart your future steps. But it’s equally important to remember how far you have come.

Keep your Passion Alive: People with great passion can make the impossible happen. The target must be so alluring and sensational that you forget everything else. Passionate people are often labeled misfits and queer because they operate at different levels. In your quest for success, be prepared to be labeled a misfit.

Have a Broad Perspective: You can’t accomplish everything all at once. And remember, you are in this for the long haul. Anything worth achieving will demand great determination. This is where most people quit at the one-yard line. They have been in this race for so long and achieved so little that they are tempted to give it all up. But what separates the winners from the rest is a “never die” attitude. They stick to it until they achieve their dreams.

In all my years of coaching countless individuals, the one thing that has stood out to me is simply this, “You cannot accomplish anything worthwhile until your entire being is consumed with the relentless energy to achieve what you have set. Nothing can beat that raw drive and passion.

Find your passion. And then Give it all you have got!

Here’s a parting thought:

I know that if things were going to improve,
I was the One responsible for making it happen.

See you at the Top!!

Twelve steps to Transition

Twelve TIPS to Create Transformations in Life

“Take the first step in faith. You do not have to see the whole staircase; just take the first step.”
One of the most influential thinkers of this century uttered these words a long time ago. Martin Luther King Jr.

And yet taking that First step is fraught with anxiety and second thoughts. The moment we think of taking action, our mind immediately goes to work. It presents a million reasons why a particular venture won’t work, why it’s not the right time, why it will hamper existing activities, and so forth. Our minds, thus thoroughly convinced, prefer complacency and inaction. And this cycle repeats itself and is commonly known as Procrastination and affects millions worldwide.

If you are reading this and wondering how to break this cycle of lethargy and indecision, you are in the right place.

There are only two ways for long-term behaviour change: Change your environment, or start with something tiny that’s very easy to repeat and make that become a habit. The tiny habits method requires minimal motivation and is best for procedural type habits we wish to create.

BJ Fogg’s proposed a simple model which is commonly known as B=MAT model: When the trigger, motivation, and ability happen at the same time, the behaviour will occur. Use your existing behaviour as triggers. If you put the new behaviour after an existing behaviour, you can use the existing behaviour as a trigger. Then string the tiny habits together to form a routine.

If you have an habit of smoking every few hours, if you place a new behaviour like every time you want to smoke, you get up and start walking or call up your coach or parents or someone close to you. When you repeat this new behaviour couple of times, it strings together the trigger with the new behaviour to form a routine.

Further whenever the behaviour is rewarded, we will be more inclined to repeat the behaviour.

For example Procrastination can become a habit because when we procrastinate, it’s always for short-term mood repair: We procrastinate to avoid feeling the anxiety or fear which is rewarded with a feeling of relief. And when we reward a behaviour, we’re more likely to repeat it.

Let me give you some TIPS you can take right now that will enable you to transition into greater productivity and will serve as the launchpad that will position you for more excellent opportunities:

TIP Number One Live by the Regret Minimization framework. Nothing is more painful than looking back with regret and wishing you had the courage to take action.

TIP Number Two Decide what you “truly” want. What makes you come alive? What seems effortless? What would motivate you to jump out of bed in the every morning?

TIP Number Three- Keep the Bigger Picture in mind. We are not aiming for temporary gains, though they are great. Rather the objective must be, If I see myself ten years from now, would I be happy with the outcome?

TIP Number Four Take Personal responsibility. I cannot emphasize this enough. Is there anyone coming to save you, and no one will accomplish your dreams for you? If you want it, go for it.

TIP Number Five- Be Comfortable with the Uncomfortable. We have often heard the term, “Live Life Out of your comfort zone. There are moments when you would like nothing better than to quit. It’s at those times you must remind yourself why you started. Keep Going!

TIP Number Six Establish a disciplined framework or a robust action plan. Now that you have the bigger picture, how do you get there? Break it down into manageable action steps. Nothing audacious. Remember, one step at a time. You might have the best framework and might probably be brimming with positivity. But it will amount to nothing if you lack the discipline to pursue it.

TIP Number SevenBe Intentional with your time. Eliminate distractions and unnecessary activities that can be delegated. Everyone, like you, has the same 24 hours. Be a master at time management. Your future self will thank you.

TIP Number Eight Expect rejections. Fail, Fail, and fail again. It’s as important as success. In Michael Jordan’s words- “I must have missed more than 9000 shots in my career and lost almost 300 games. More than 26 times, I have been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life, and that is why I succeed.”

TIP Number Nine Create a Winning Environment. Your environment always has a direct correlation to your overall productivity. Create an ambiance where you would love to work and watch your productivity skyrocket.

TIP Number Ten Get Enough zzz. Yes, you heard that right! Too many people sacrifice sleep in a bid to accomplish more. Unfortunately, this plan backfires and ends up creating additional problems.

TIP Number Eleven Stop Believing in Quick fixes. There are no shortcuts to success. People often say, “The view is excellent from the top. “Of Course it is. Sometimes you must go through hell and high water until you reach the top. The Sense of Achievement will far outweigh the efforts invested. I promise.

Have you heard of the adage? Nothing is as risky as staying stagnant. There is a world of truth in that statement. In a constantly evolving world, staying right where you are is akin to playing with fire. It can have severe repercussions.

And that brings me to the last but significant Point!

TIP Number Twelve It’s not an option. To have a different result, you have to do things differently. Time is flying. Take some time today to implement the strategies listed above. Let today be the beginning of something great!

Remember Small Transitions pave way for Major Transformation in Life.

Day One or Some Day. You Decide.

Why you must step out of the comfort zone

Change Happens Outside Your Comfort Zone

“Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” – A.A. Milne

At some point in our lives, we do everything for the first time; therefore, accepting challenges and, at times, failures are a part of stepping out of our comfort zone. We all have a comfort zone, that space within which we feel safe and in control and where things come easy for us. Life seems good in the comfort zone because there is little to be afraid of or worried about, and there is a low risk of failure, rejection, or other unpleasant experiences. However, the problem with living in our comfort zone is that there is little room for growth and learning. Growth and learning come only from venturing beyond the comfort zone.

And yet, the vast majority of people are gripped by an icy fear and experience feelings of significant discomfort the moment they are faced with the proposition of change. Why is this, you may ask? Possibly it could be the fear of the unknown, fear of failing, or at other times, “What will people think if I fail?” All of the above could be just an assumption with no real truth to it, but it still stops people in their tracks. Most people would prefer a highly toxic situation and let sleeping dogs lie rather than rock the boat.

The infographics provided by Positive Psychology speak of different Zones where various behavior changes occur.

Comfort Zone

The red circle represents our comfort zone. It is the space in which we feel safe and in control. However, no Learning or Growth takes place here.

Fear Zone

To learn and grow, we must leave the comfort zone and step into the fear zone (orange circle), which is far less comfortable. The fear zone is uncomfortable. We do not know what to expect and cannot build on our previous experiences.

Learning Zone

If we can muster the courage to endure the fear zone, we come out on the other side, the learning zone. (Yellow Circle) , where we can begin to acquire new skills and learn to deal with challenges and problems.

Growth Zone

When we stay long enough in the learning zone, we begin to experience that we can change and start to redefine ourselves in terms of what we can do, achieve, and feel comfortable with. The growth zone is the bigger picture, that which we have gained at a more fundamental, personal level. Entering the growth zone is the ultimate reward for enduring the fear zone.

Stepping out could well mean the difference between mediocre and excellent. If you are one of those who gravitate towards excellence, this is for you.

Consider a person with a fear of public speaking. Avoiding any and every opportunity to speak publicly allows this person to remain in his comfort zone and not face the fear of failing, not knowing, or unsatisfactory performance.

If, however, an unavoidable speaking event arises, such as being asked to speak at a work meeting, this person will be required to leave their comfort zone and step into the fear zone. Just before the meeting, this person may experience feelings of anxiety and self-doubt and a strong desire to run away. However, by enduring this fear and speaking at the gathering, he/she will enter the learning zone and begin to acquire new skills.

This growth and learning could not have occurred, had this person opted to stay within his comfort zone.

Five Benefits of Stepping Out of the Comfort Zone

Risk-taking ability. Taking risks helps us to grow. People who take calculated risks, again and again, develop renewed confidence. They are at extreme ease in new, unexpected situations.

Your ability to navigate your emotions will be phenomenal when you live a life of continuously stepping out of your comfort zone. You will be better equipped as a result of that failure.

You will begin to see yourself differently. Having crossed the Fear Zone and staying in the Learning Zone, you have gone through the “toughening up,” and your confidence will be at an all-time high.

Your skillset will grow. In other words, you might be considered an expert in your field, which will lead to more opportunities. You will, in essence, have established your credibility, & that’s a powerful place to operate from.

You will motivate others without lifting a finger. Your Survival Guide will script someone else’s success story.

And it all starts with a choice. Now, you are just one decision away from choosing a completely different life. Move Mountains, take risks, and step out of your comfort zone today. Your future self will thank you. I guarantee that!!

The Power of Being Proactive

One of the secrets of success is to refuse to let temporary setbacks defeat us. Every individual on this planet has perhaps faced a failure or a setback at some stage in their life. Successful people forge ahead despite the setbacks and see failure as an opportunity to come back stronger. While others see setbacks as an excuse to blame themselves and the circumstances for their misfortunes. In the words of the prominent philosopher, Denis Waitley. “Success in life comes not from holding a good hand, but in playing a poor hand well.”’

Being proactive in a negative situation is not naïve. Its leadership. An individual’s response governs not only how far they will go but also the influence they might have on others. The ability to see the gold in every situation is a skill that must be mastered. And the fact that you are reading this right now is a demonstration of your desire to cultivate those skills.

Given below are some of the key steps that I have seen countless people implement successfully in their lives. In no particular Order:

Stop being “the Victim”– Often we see ourselves at being the receiving end of things. Things didn’t go our way. People treated us badly. And our plans backfired. Now we play the victim card and end up feeling more miserable. Stop adding fuel to the fire and choose to take ownership. Nothing will make you feel better than choosing to actively participate in the construction of your life.

Some people will Never Support you– The World is not waiting to cheer you on and let’s accept it, “some people will never give you credit even if you accomplish the gigantic task of conquering Mt Everest.” Accept it. Do yourself a favor and Move on.

Learn from your failures– This is crucial. Most people would prefer to forget the embarrassing episode and the time that presentation bombed. Quick tip. People aren’t quite thinking about it as much as you are. Learn the lesson. Or else life will present the same test again to do a quick check on your proficiency.

It’s all About Perspective– Jack Ma failed multiple times before Alibaba became a household name. Would he have gotten far if he hadn’t learnt from his failures? I doubt it.

Think about how far you have Come– All the challenges and roadblocks that you faced. The Innumerable obstacles you faced to make it till this very minute. Are you seriously going to throw it all away for a temporary detour?

Take a break, PLEASE– You must have heard this repeated quite often. “Rest if you must but don’t you quit. Or, “sleep on it. “We are not designed to function on optimum efficiency 24/7. And when you are severely burned out, minor irritations can take the shape of something momentous. Taking a break is not a luxury. It’s a necessity just as important as food and water.

Pay Attention to the Details– Every failure, every setback has unlimited potential. Now you know what wont work. Now you have gone through the fire so to speak. Those lessons will prove to be priceless when you embark on another venture. Failure is just as important as Success.

Take Personal Responsibility– Most people would prefer coasting through life and then naively expect a different result. Our lives are governed by cause and effect. Its virtually impossible to reap the results if you haven’t invested any effort into it.

Play the Long Game– There are no quick fixes. And if you live long enough, you will inevitably run into defeats and failures. Your response in a negative situation will change the dynamic. Choose wisely.

Resolve to make a Winning Comeback– Now you have gone through it all. Resolve to WIN this time around. The greater the failure, the greater the drive to succeed. Fail and fail often. That is the fuel you need for your home run.

Remember, mistakes are proof that you are trying. That you are human. Every setback is an invitation to grow, evolve and come back stronger. Les Brown sums it up brilliantly,” Anytime you suffer a setback or disappointment, put your head down and plow ahead.”

Your Setback is the Platform for your Comeback.
