Parenting – A Relationship that Nurtures Future

Parenting – A Relationship that Nurtures Future

Are happy families rapidly becoming extinct in this new age of limitless possibilities? In this age of groundbreaking technological developments and global interconnectedness, keeping in touch with one’s own immediate family seems like a daunting task. Sitting around the fire while sharing a sumptuous meal and funny anecdotes seem confined only to special occasions and holidays. Senior citizens who are relegated to assisted living have become commonplace, a liability that has to be swiftly taken care of. This is the generation of instant fixes. More and more families are adopting a nuclear style of co-existence, as opposed to the joint family system of yesteryears.

In today’s world, parenting has become almost equivalent to running a marathon. In a mad dash to meet deadlines and official responsibilities, children are left at daycare centers or tuition centers. As they grow older, they prefer the world of video games and TV dinners, never having had the chance to interact at a deeper level. Parenting just boils down to provision, and nothing more. The result shouldn’t come as a surprise when more and more children resort to violence fuelled by angst and unresolved feelings. I have seen this played out on numerous occasions in the widely popular Crime series on BBC. Excessive abandonment triggers a deep psychological need to vent and commit audacious crimes. Why is this important? Perhaps to realize how widespread dysfunction can spread for lack of adequate parental support and love. There are always exceptions to the rule, but prevalent psychosocial disorders are inevitably the result of dysfunctional homes. Teenage rebellion is a rite of passage, but coupled with bad parenting is a potent cocktail for disaster. Rehabilitation and therapy can work effectively for the individual, but the damage is already done. We shall explore why good parenting is the need of the hour.

Good parenting is a byproduct of stable committed relationships, where people are mutually invested.

That is the bedrock for creating happy homes, where children thrive. Setting boundaries, establishing good rapport and creating an atmosphere of discipline don’t happen by chance. They are the result of some “serious work” that couples diligently have worked upon. The ripple effects of this kind of parenting are immeasurable, seen over generations. You may ask, Why is this information important to me? Because, you, my friend have the potential to create positive change in your family and impact it in more ways than you imagine. Children in today’s age are bombarded with tons of information, and the relentless drive to compete is starting at a younger age. They need to know they can rely on YOU. They need to know that you will be available and non-judgmental. The statistics for teenage suicides are unbelievable. The World is a dangerous place, where bullying and verbal insults can wreck the kind of damage that will render a child completely devoid of emotion. The importance of having a home that is welcoming and a safe haven can’t be emphasized enough.

Parenting, like any art, requires some sacrifices and a lot of work,  that needs to be perfected over time. In all the years of being a coach, the number one principle that stands out is, TIME. Ironically, that is the one thing that’s in short supply. Children need time, lots of it, in order to handle life’s demands. Go on walks, fishing trips or a road trip. Sometimes, young children need additional support mechanisms to cross over into adolescence. They need to see relationships being modeled in front of them. They need to know that their parents love each other.

If you feel that your parenting skills need a little brushing up, you can always reach out to a relationship expert or a coach who can help you get there. Many couples feel overwhelmed by sudden outbursts and persistent “violent behavior”. It’s crucial to handle such situations with extreme caution, and not retaliate. One of the first steps in the right direction is to discover your image for a happy family and those of others in your family. The next logical step would align all members of the family with some common values, knowing well that each and every member have their own image of a happy family.

I use a technique called family wheel for improvement, and set a vision for an empowered family and identify beliefs that hold you back from becoming an empowered family before I coach on how to build an empowered family. Whether you are a new parent and want to learn the ropes or you are an experienced one dealing with teenage angst, reach out to a coach who can give you the tools to master parenting. The end result? To create an empowered family that’s high on synergy.

Leadership Strengths a Holistic Perspective

What Would You Do If You weren’t Afraid?

John Maxwell defines leadership as Influence. But, true leadership is much more than that.  It is an eclectic mix of qualities that make an individual stand out.  Now, we all know that not everyone is born great. Some have greatness thrust upon them, whereas others make their own path and leave a legacy. We shall explore the latter.

We all have been designed with a DNA that is completely unique. No two individuals are the same, and our capabilities if harnessed expertly have the potential to make us great. The Catch? The majority of individuals die with the music still in them. Ironic Isn’t it? I have always been fascinated with the workings of the human mind and why people do what they do. And in all my years of interacting with people from all walks of life, I have come across this blatant truth played out in people’s lives. We are afraid. Afraid of the Dark, afraid of the future, afraid of stepping out. And that single thought stunts an individual’s growth, like nothing else.

It’s easier said than done!! And leadership certainly is not a trait that can be memorized and can certainly not be mastered while following the pack. And why is it important to demonstrate leadership? Because the times demand it.

Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Ellen Degeneres, and a host of other leaders just didn’t become a leader by chance. While it might be true that they had the basic qualities that made them stand out, it’s also important to mention that they worked at their craft meticulously. Why do the majority of leaders fail despite good intentions? Because they just might be following the same principles blindly that made others great. Figure out what makes you tick. What is it that you are good at? Trust me, I was in the wrong industry for years and I wondered why I struggled so much. Dream and have a big Vision, but know when to draw the line and pursue your inner instinct.

We shall explore a few of the essential practices that are timeless, and they are by no means exhaustive. Emotional Intelligence ranks number one on the list with the sheer dimension it covers. You get this right and people will willingly buy into your vision. High Energy Relationships don’t amount to being a people pleaser. It’s building the right connections and building your brand. Dynamic Communication equals the power of simple and conciseness. Time is everything. Productivity simply implies performance. Day in and Day out. As I mentioned earlier, have a big vision and work every day towards that master goal. Problem Solving is a biggie. It requires analytical reasoning and the patience to deal with sudden unexpected delays. Inspiring others is quite simply, empowering others. Let’s face it! It’s lonely at the top, and you certainly wouldn’t want to be there all alone. Cultivate wellness and make it a goal to let life take you by surprise sometimes. That’s the serendipity of life. Time Management ranks last on the list and is the driver for key performance. Build your life around key priorities and then establish a mechanism to achieve it. Followed meticulously, it has the potential to yield a rich harvest irrespective of the climate.

Now that you have a map that gives a brief overview of leadership, your next step is to identify where you are.

Some achieve breakthroughs earlier, while others need a bit of coaching to help them get there. It’s okay to ask for help and have a supportive network. But remember, the ability to build your life rests in your own hands.

I would love to mention real-life examples, and the list would go on and on. But I will leave you with one thought. “It’s not important how and where you start. That was not in YOUR hands. But, it’s important how YOU finish. AND, that is in YOUR hands. Let this thought be the starting point as YOU write your OWN Masterpiece!!!

The Question of Balance

True Self-care is not salt baths and chocolate cake, it is making the choice to build a life you don’t need to regularly escape from, remarked a wise philosopher and is the perfect starting point for this foray into finding balance.

Finding balance is all about the ability to manage all of life’s demands like a master juggler, handling the professional and the personal with remarkable dexterity. It should be a cakewalk, but it’s a tightrope. No wonder, the vast majority of us struggle to find that sweet spot!  When Eat, Pray, Love released worldwide, I was among one of its first connoisseurs, and I absolutely identified with the character that Julia Roberts portrayed in the movie. How absolutely delightful to roam the ancient city and eat pasta at a quaint roadside café, or go on a bicycling spree through the lush countryside. Surely, this was the antidote to life’s demands. But, how many of us can really invest that kind of time into such pursuits?

The answer is surprisingly simple and almost contradictory.  We have been raised with the all-encompassing belief that the more complex the answer, the more value it possesses. Sometimes, the answers to life’s great questions are surprisingly simple. Maybe it’s time to pause a little and breathe in. Funnily enough, most individuals consider pausing as a sort of crime. Statements like, “ I can’t afford to slow down” are considered wise. Not really!

We all have heard the antidote to life’s major stressors, “eat right, sleep right, meditate and a host of other practices like yoga and tai- chi. I am a vigorous advocate of the above-mentioned practices, and if practiced resolutely can lead to great results.

But, I also think it’s time for us to practice a radical way of being. Whoever coined the term “mini-vacations’ deserves applause. It’s the ability to temporarily disconnect from one’s surroundings and explore a new vista, and No, it doesn’t always mean packing a suitcase and heading to some exotic location. I think there is great danger in saying, “I will do it at a later date, and more often than not, life stuns us, and we aren’t left with enough time. Lisa Ray’s path-breaking book, “Close to the Bone” explores the pathos when life hits you unexpectedly and you have nothing left to do but fight, and it’s a race against time. No pun intended. There is no better time than the present to UNWIND.

It’s extremely important to prioritize and introspect as to why we do the things we do. It’s equally important to have a game plan and decide on deadlines, but not to be consumed by them. We are not machines and were never designed to operate without a break in the pattern. The four dimensions, the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual have to work in harmony in order to achieve maximum balance. There is a very powerful point that I would like to stress upon here,

Passion fuels creativity. But it’s equally important to realize when to shut down the phone and head into the woods for a walk. Be creative. Think of ways to engage with the world. It can be downright simple but it has the power to bring stillness to the raging demands that life sometimes imposes!

The statistics for an average individual’s life expectancy is alarming. And it’s on the rise.  In a desperate bid to win, we have forgotten to live. And, clocking hours like a maniac is not a wise move! Let’s get back to the basics and discover the incredible power of stillness, and in so doing conserve energy for great ventures.

Creating the perfect rhythm with all the four dimensions of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual is hard work. But consider it as preparation for making categorical decisions. As one wise philosopher remarked, “It’s not the short sprint. It’s the battle that matters, and every successful entrepreneur can vouch for the fact that marathons are not won easily.”

Reading a book on “finding balance” is great, but one has to discover what works, or in other words, find your unique combination. What makes you tick, and then follow it down to the T. I found the perfect balance not on a trip to Switzerland, but on a rainy day with a steaming cup of coffee. Remarkable, Isn’t it? The Power of Simple!!!!
