The Power of Perspective – Career Path

The Power of Perspective – Career Path

From the moment youngsters have learnt the art of stringing words together, their parents and teachers relentlessly talk about the importance of charting a career path. Our planet is witnessing remarkable change and growth, with new concepts and paradigms taking shape. What was relevant yesterday is outdated today. This is a radical shift and demands greater emphasis on the training and subsequent personality development for the younger generation.

We shall explore in greater detail each of the career quadrants, which can be effectively broken down into four divisions. The first quadrant focuses on happiness which further leads to fulfillment and inner satisfaction. The second quadrant focuses on money, as the end goal. The third quadrant is education and the joy of learning and reading. The fourth quadrant is all about leaving a legacy. Every individual associate himself/herself with one particular quadrant, or in some cases, some individuals identify with each of the four quadrants in different proportions. In all my years of research and subsequent interactions with people belonging to various career ventures, what

Perhaps, in this frantic desire to achieve a degree, individuals have forgotten the purpose, and more importantly, what they really want to do or would like to be involved in.

Before attempting any feat or venture, it’s very important to ask oneself certain hard-hitting questions. Let me emphasize it again, “It’s very important to ask oneself” . Not the family or the government or your mentor. No Pun intended. Sadly, this generation is focused on doing or blindly believing what someone else has said. Questions like,

These days individuals are focused on drowning the inner voice by involving oneself in frantic activity, drinking or being supremely busy. Let me emphasize this, “Business doesn’t equal productivity. Perhaps, it might be a wise decision to work smarter, not harder, but I shall save that concept and explore it in detail in another article.

CareerThis dialogue is meant to motivate you to start thinking, take a deep dive into introspection, and ask yourself questions that will only embolden you to take stock. Always remember, it’s never too late to make changes that eventually make you happy. There’s no better time than the present. There is another concept that individuals buy into, before exploring it. “He/she is better than me or has better resources. They might be, but you are by no means any less. I loved Sheryl Sandberg’s book, “Lean In”, in which she recounts her own personal journey, and how she saw talent at every turn. But those individuals never “stepped up” .  I couldn’t agree with her more on this.

The only person stopping you is “Yourself”.

This Universe operates on certain principles and funnily enough has a way of rewarding each individual with one opportunity to prove themselves. Will you step up?

Take some time out, if you can. Go on a vacation, and yes, contrary to popular opinion and practice,

Explore your inner instincts. Hone your talents and get back into the mainstream with renewed vigor. For years, I believed in the importance of reading books on career pathways and then following it with utmost sincerity, and though it might work for some, it didn’t for me. I discovered what I really wanted on a vacation to the European highlands, and practicing meditation. My Point? Explore what really works for you. For some it might be one step to the end result, for others, it might be a series of steps. Focus on the end goal and steadily move towards it.

Now here’s a small exercise for you that will give you a hint as to where you are on the career wheel. Rate yourself in the fields of:

  1. Leadership
  2. Achievement
  3. Personal Performance
  4. Vision
  5. Fulfillment
  6. Self Expression
  7. Organization
  8. Excellence

One being the lowest and ten being the highest. Now having rated yourself, what would be different if you would want to rate them, a number or two higher than your present rating. A Professionally trained Coach can bring the best out of you, just working on these ratings.

I wish you luck as you venture deeper into finding true meaning and lasting happiness in your career. “Find something in life that you love doing. If you make a lot of money, that’s a bonus. And if you don’t, you still won’t hate going to work.”
